AL-HISTO and Stanford University looking for Thomas Jefferson in Paris

Publié le par al-histo

Contacted a couple of weeks ago by a company called International Seminar Design Inc., based in Washington DC, AL-HISTO has set up a tour for a group of Stanford Alumni. The idea was to honour Thomas Jefferson's memory, one of the father of the American Revolution and the 3rd president of the United States. He was ambassador to France and lived in Paris between 1785 and 1789.

Therefore, we visited :

  • The Pantheon, whose dome inspired the one crowning the Congress on Capitole Hill in Washington D.C.
  • The Jardin des Plantes, managed by Georges Buffon, a great friend of Jefferson
  • The "Bourse du Commerce", known as the "Halle aux Blés" or wheat market in the 18th century. Jefferson admired its design and especially its dome and double revolution staircase...
  • The Palais Royal, center of business and pleasures, in pre-revolutionnary Paris

We also stopped by :

  • Odiot shopfloor : Odiot is probably the most ancient goldsmith in Paris. Founded in 1690, under Louis XIV, the workshop served aristocratics families throughout Europe. Jefferson required their skills to make a cup he designed. The Jefferson cup can still be purchased in silver or vermeil
  • 92, Avenue des Champs Elysées. At that time this was the adress of Hotel de Langeac where Jefferson lived.

Everyone enjoyed the tour. They left to Burgundy, to enjoy wine tasting. Next time, they promised they'll visit Champagne!!
